Volunteer position details

Have any questions about our open positions, application process, or your qualifications?

Contact our managing editor, Tegwyn Hughes, at editors@the-pigeon.ca and she’ll do her best to address your concerns.

Staff Writer

Each staff writer is responsible for pitching, researching, and writing two long-form articles per month. Similar to writing for The Pigeon as a contributor, staff writers work closely with the publication’s editors to create written content for the site. Staff writers, however, benefit from consistent feedback on their work, peer mentorship, the ability to explore more in-depth ideas, and ongoing bylines.

An ideal applicant should have some beginner journalism experience, whether in a campus paper, magazine, blog, etc. Experience writing features and other long-form projects is an asset. Otherwise, applicants should have a strong work ethic, initiative, and passion for Canadian journalism.

  • Write at least two long-form articles per month for The Pigeon. This process includes:
    • Conducting interviews in person or on the phone;
    • Researching information and statistics;
    • Writing a first draft in a timely manner;
    • Working with editors to incorporate suggestions
  • Stay up-to-date on current events, both locally and nationally
  • Regularly pitch stories to the editorial management team
  • Share The Pigeon‘s content regularly on social media
  • Attend once-weekly digital team meetings and workshops

Estimated time commitment: 10-15 hours per week

Those interested in applying to volunteer for this role should email a brief cover letter, resume, and writing portfolio to editors@the-pigeon.ca by the evening of Friday, January 22, 2021.

The podcast producer oversees one podcast editor and podcast hosts, and works with the managing editor. The ideal applicant will have some audio production experience, whether in podcasting, radio, or videos. Experience hosting or producing podcasts specifically is an asset. Otherwise, applicants should have a strong work ethic, previous leadership experience, and passion for Canadian journalism.

  • Work on the podcast team alongside show hosts, an editor, and other staff members.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the development and publication of podcast episodes.
  • Work collaboratively with podcast hosts and their guests
  • Help organize meetings and interviews

Outreach Manager

The outreach manager is responsible for creating unique experiences for our readers outside of articles. By creating a weekly newsletter and working with the managing editor on donor-specific content and workshops, the outreach manager has a chance to make supporting The Pigeon worthwhile!

The ideal applicant should have some knowledge of newsletters, whether as a creator or subscriber, and be able to brainstorm best practices for a unique newsletter. Experience in social media, marketing, and/or fundraising would be an asset. Otherwise, applicants should have a strong work ethic, take initiative, and have a passion for Canadian journalism.
